Laser Etching on Glass

The three main methods of permanently applying designs or other marking on glass are:

  • Acid etching, using acids to cut into the glass, using stencils of various types.
  • Sand carving, using various abrasives to cut into the glass, again using stencils.
  • Laser etching, using a CO2 laser to transfer a digital image onto the glass.

Acid etching produces relatively little detail and is used primarily by hobbyists.

Sand carving (also called sand blasting) is capable of cutting deeply into glass to produce 3-dimensional effects. It can produce higher levels of detail than acid etching, and various minerals are used as abrasives to achieve different effects.

Laser etching provides the greatest detail, up to and including the transferring of photographic images onto glass. Images are digitized and then created on the surface of the glass in startling detail. Laser etching does not provide the depth of image available with sand carving, but by reversing the image and applying it to the back of the glass, so that it is viewed through the glass provides an element of depth.
